DV Vic congratulates the Turnbull government on following through with their commitment to prohibit direct cross examination of family violence victims by their abusers. We support Women’s Legal Services Australia in their call to ensure this important legislation is supported with adequate resourcing.
“This legislation is vital in supporting survivors of family violence engaging with the Family Law system. Being directly questioned in the Family Court by an abusive former partner is retraumatising for survivors of family violence. It impacts on their ability to tell their story and have a fair outcome.”
Early identification of family violence will be critical to the success of this legislation. The review of the Family Law system by the ALRC is looking at how family violence can be identified earlier and we look forward to its recommendations on how to create a safer Family Law system for women and children.
